Finding the Ideal Roller Sprocket
A sprocket is a rotating mechanical wheel with teeth that mesh with a roller or conveyor chain to facilitate its movement in various applications and equipment. As the sprocket rotates about a central axis, the specially designed teeth engage the gaps in the chain, pulling the chain securely in dirty or greasy environments. While sprockets may resemble gears, they are designed only to work with chains, not other sprockets or gears.

Components of Sprocket
Each sprocket has many different characteristics, including:
Number of Teeth: This is the total number of teeth on the sprocket, which are individually called teeth.
Pitch Diameter: This is the circumference of the sprocket at the inside point between the points of the teeth where the chain meets the sprocket.
Outer Diameter: The circumference of the ends of the sprocket teeth.
Pitch: The full measurement of each tooth, usually expressed in inches. This needs to fit the pitch between the pins on the chain.
A roller sprocket is a gear used with a roller chain to transmit mechanical power. The teeth of the sprocket interlock with the individual chain components. When the sprocket rotates, it pulls the chain and transmits power from the drive end of the system to the driven end.
Roller Sprockets
Commonly used in industrial and commercial applications, roller sprockets transmit force to a chain by meshing with rollers in the chain, where the teeth fit between the chain’s inner plates. A variety of applications benefit from these, including conveyors, large industrial drives, robotics, motorized components, and more.
Sprockets use a simple but extremely important mechanism to transmit reliable mechanical force; therefore, it is important to select the right part to ensure long life for critical systems, taking into account loads and manufacturing conditions.
Sprockets can be used in a variety of applications, including forestry, agriculture, and more. Choosing the right sprocket is just as important as using the right chain – a mismatch can be catastrophic, resulting in expensive machine damage or even dangerous accidents.
Without a reliable sprocket for your machine, production levels drop and profits suffer.
Are you having trouble describing your sprocket so you can replace it effectively?
Here are some questions we often ask our customers to help them point them in the right direction:
Do you know what type of roller sprocket you need?
How is your roller sprocket used – as a drive sprocket or an idler?
What size bore do you need?
Do you need keyways and set screws?
How many teeth does your sprocket have?
What size chain do you use?
With answers to these questions and evaluations, you will know what angle you should buy from.
