Why Tapered Roller Bearings Are Used In Pairs?

Tapered roller bearings consist of an inner ring, an outer ring, tapered rollers, and a window-style cage that holds the rollers in place. Typically, the inner ring, tapered rollers, and cage that forms the cone are all integral and can be mounted separately from the outer ring.
The taper angle enables tapered roller bearings to support large axial and radial loads in one direction. A second bearing is usually required to provide axial guidance in the other direction. The angle and axis of the bearing also determine the ratio between axial and radial load capacities.

Why Tapered Roller Bearings Are Used In Pairs

Tapered roller bearings are used in pairs because they are designed to carry both radial and axial loads. When mounted as a single bearing, they can only support axial loads in one direction. By being used in pairs, with one bearing facing the opposite direction of the other, they can effectively carry axial loads in both directions while also providing greater radial load capacity and stability. This arrangement helps ensure precise alignment, reduces deflection, and improves overall performance in applications such as automotive wheels, gearboxes, and heavy machinery.
Double or two-row cylindrical roller bearings are designed for heavy loads that single-row bearings cannot handle. The extra row of rollers can handle greater radial loads.

Applications of Tapered Rollers

In many applications, tapered roller bearings are used in a back-to-back arrangement so that axial forces can be equally supported in either direction.
Here are some of the main application areas:
Automotive Industry
Tapered roller bearings are widely used in the automotive industry for wheel bearings, drivetrains, and engines. The high load capacity of tapered roller bearings makes them a suitable choice because of the different directions and magnitudes of loads that cars need to withstand.
Power Generation Industry
In equipment such as power plants, wind turbines, and hydroelectric generators, tapered roller bearings are used to support rotating components such as generator rotors and wheel hubs.
Railway Industry
Tapered roller bearings are used in trains and locomotives to support axles and gear systems. These bearings can withstand high loads while providing stable operation.

Aerospace Industry
In the aerospace field, tapered roller bearings are widely used in critical components such as aircraft engines, landing gear, and aircraft wheels, and are able to withstand complex loads.
Construction machinery
Excavators, bulldozers, cranes and other construction machinery have harsh operating environments. Tapered roller bearings can provide reliable support under heavy loads and vibration conditions.
